Luke manages to steal the formula and slip it on the witches soup. He manages to escape and meet with Bruno, the two going after Helga's room, where they plan to stop the witches plan. One of the witches catches the scent of Luke, so the Grand High Witch tracks him down and force-feeds him her formula, turning him into a mouse as well. However, the meeting was being eavesdropped by Luke, a boy who was in the hotel with his grandmother Helga, who warned him about witches and is implied to have faced the Grand High Witch before. She demonstrates her formula by inviting a boy called Bruno, who had been previously given a chocolate with the formula, as he slowly turns into a mouse. The Grand High Witch especially had a plan that would climax in turning all the children of England into mice, to be disposed of either by the witches themselves, or by their Afraid parents. This was considered to be her ultimate punishment, and the other witches were terrified of her. As one of the most influential and powerful sorceresses on Earth, she leads a secret society of like-minded witches in their never-ending quest to wipe out children once and for all.ĭuring each and every single meeting she ever attended, she would murder one of her own followers simply to keep the other witches focused. Slowly about 16 personalities rise from within Sybil (including two male alters, Mike and Sid). Wilbur realizes that Sybil is a case of MPD (an almost unheard of disorder back then) and she would have to dig deeper in to the case. Wilbur takes her through a routine course of treatment until the day she meets “Vicky”- another personality inhabiting Sybil’s body. She speaks of finding herself in new cities and town, in clothes she never remembered buying. She speaks of losing time, fading in and out of consciousness over erratic time frames (sometimes hours, sometimes days). In 1954, New York psychiatrist Cornelia Wilbur has a new client –a thin, nervous young woman complaining of unusual back outs. As clichéd as it may sound, the pain and horrid incidents reflected in the book are sure to send a chill down your spine. It reveals the different personalities living within one woman (Sybil), in the course of (about) twenty years of her life that the book spans. It portrays sexual, physical and emotional abuse by the hands of a mentally disturbed mother. Sybil is said to be a true story based on one of the most severe cases of MPD and child abuse in history. The book is about split personalities (MPD- Multiple Personality Disorder) that is a by-product of child abuse essentially. What shocked me most was the ideation of the novel. The issue of child abuse, put in one of the most horrifying ways, makes this a difficult book to “just read” through. I don’t know where to begin from and what to write. This was followed by “Pride and Prejudice,” “Mansfield Park,” “Emma,” and “Persuasion,” among others.Īusten’s novels are known for their realism and social commentary. She began writing at a young age, and her first novel, “Sense and Sensibility,” was published in 1811. She was the seventh of eight children and grew up in a close-knit family. Jane Austen was born in the village of Steventon, England in 1775. Here are a few of the most memorable quotes by Jane Austen on life, love, nature, books and more. Though she lived over 200 years ago, her words continue to resonate with readers today. She is often celebrated for her sharp observations on the society of her time, as well as her ability to create complex and relatable characters. Colleen Hoover is without a doubt one of the best writers I've ever read, so I knew this one was going to be unlike anything I've ever read. All I knew is that Silas was too adorable and the relationship between Charlie and Silas was beautiful. I literally had no idea what was going on or why the things that happened in the book were even happening. I read this one going in with only the 5 sentence summary on Goodreads and I think that was a major part of why I loved this book (novella?) so much. And boy, am I glad a did!įor this review, I'm not going to give a synopsis or tell you anything about what actually happens. I don't know why, but I feel like if I can't hold it, then why should I spend money on it? But when Colleen Hoover published Never Never and it was only being released as an ebook for the time being, I knew I had to give in and buy myself a copy. And I was delighted with about 99% of the book: it is a fun book, it is wonderfully written, the story itself has awesome twists and turns and right up until the very ending I was a very happy reader. I love stories with thieves as protagonists and I was most intrigued and happy to see a blind kid as the main character of this story. A story about a blind thief? We’re in!Īna: I am just going to be upfront and start by saying: this book broke my heart. Why did we read this book: It sounded good, it looked good and above all: it had the potential to be really, really good. Left with only her loving and very forgiving father and bitter memories that cause her to walk in fear and unforgivness. Morrow Little, the main character's life is left in shambles at the tender age of 5yrs old, after losing her mother, brother and baby sister in an Indian raid. This book takes place in the wild and untamed territory of kentucky, in the late 1700's. With a lyricism reminiscent of Toni Morrison, Robert Jones, Jr. Isaiah and Samuel’s love, which was once so simple, is seen as sinful and a clear danger to the plantation’s harmony. But when an older man-a fellow slave-seeks to gain favor by preaching the master’s gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. Isaiah was Samuel’s and Samuel was Isaiah’s. The Official Description: A singular and stunning debut novel about the forbidden union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation, the refuge they find in each other, and a betrayal that threatens their existence. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. A thought-provoking journey into emotion science." - Wall Street Journal "A singular book, remarkable for the freshness of its ideas and the boldness and clarity with which they are presented." - Scientific American "A brilliant and original book on the science of emotion, by the deepest thinker about this topic since Darwin." - Daniel Gilbert, best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. The month Harden spent sequestered in his bunker saw the world change drastically. The result is a terrible litany of running battles with the infected and worse. Still trying to convince them of his status and his cache of supplies, Harden is forced to go back out into the world, injured and underpowered, to prove who he is. It’s not helped when a breach in the fence results in the death of one of the camp dwellers. Whilst Harden put his body on the line to save a mother, daughter and another young boy, his appearance at a survivor camp is met with suspicion and animosity. Set straight after the first novel, a mere four days since protagonist Captain Lee Harden emerged from his bunker with the mission to help reunite the people of America, Aftermath keeps its foot firmly on the pedal. Terrifying action, brutal realism and very human characters, it’s a brilliant book. The second book in this stellar military zombie apocalypse, Aftermath is a breathless rollercoaster of a read.
